Equity and Inclusion

We pride ourselves on growing a workforce that is talented, diverse and motivated, that represents the community it serves.

Bristol has long been a diverse city and is becoming ever more diverse. This is one of its great strengths. As a diverse city, we want a workforce and a leadership team to match.

City of contrasts

Bristol has always been a city of contrasts: a diverse, culturally vibrant and economically successful city, yet 15% of our citizens are living in some of the most deprived areas in England.

We serve a population that has increased by over 40,000 in the past decade and Office for National Statistics’ most recent official projections predict population growth of 13,600 over the coming five years. Along with the projected impact on people’s health and wealth inequality, this creates a huge challenge, especially considering existing gaps in healthy life expectancy.

Our ambition

Our ambition is to create a fairer, safer, accessible, and inclusive city where everyone feels that they belong, that they have a voice, and have an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive.

Our commitment

Our commitment to equity and inclusion aims to:

  • eliminate discrimination
  • help people from different backgrounds to have similar life opportunities
  • create good relationships between communities in Bristol
  • create a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects our communities

We proactively and intentionally improve equity and inclusion across the city by designing it into everything that we do.

We’re proud to be accredited by the schemes below:

Disability Confident Employer

We’re a Disability Confident employer which means we value recruiting and retaining Disabled people. Any job applicants who consider themselves to be Disabled and meet the essential criteria in the Person Specification are guaranteed an interview. We’ll make reasonable adjustments throughout the interview process and provide continued workplace support throughout your career.

Ban the Box

We give ex-offenders a fair chance to compete for jobs by removing the ‘criminal convictions’ tick box from application forms for roles which don’t require a DBS check.

Women in Business

We understand the importance of achieving gender equality and inclusivity for all women in our workplace and closing the gender pay gap. Wherever practical, we encourage a work, life balance to enable employees to balance their career with other life commitments.

Stonewall Diversity Champion

Our workplace is an inclusive and safe environment, where all our LGBT staff are accepted without exception.

Fostering Friendly

We’re proud to be a Fostering Friendly employer. Our policies actively support employees who are foster carers or who want to become foster carers.
